Niema’s Teaching Philosophy & Art Program
Innovations Through Arts program
Understanding Creativity through Design and Discovery
The Innovations Through Arts program allows students the possibility to rigorously examine an academic concept (particularly STEM subject related) through an arts medium. Those of us in the arts field have known the value of the arts for a long time but it is about time that the main stream began to see the wide scope that defines learning and researching through the arts. Contemporary artists have been employing this approach of researching to learn and understand our world for many years and our youth need to have the same understanding of the arts that aligns with their 21st century view of the world.
The program will focus on what does it mean to think like an artist, emphasize the process of the art making as opposed to the outcome and students will integrate traditional and contemporary art making methods to question universal 21st century problems and ideas.
Embodying the Habits artists employ (Cindy Foley TED Talk)
Comfort with ambiguity – working across disciplines, not knowing the outcome of a project and being comfortable with that
Idea generation – using materials to generate ideas and to solve design problems
Trans-disciplinary – working across disciplines, taking risks, redefining boundaries
What am I selling?
These interdisciplinary art classes are an alternative to traditional art lessons. A teaching artist works with students to learn a new art skill. The students then integrates that art skill with a STEM concept — taking inspiration from contemporary artists. The emphasis here is on the process, for example researching and experimenting with the two disciplines and exploring how they integrate. Students are encouraged to document their artwork in order to reflect on their process rather than focusing on an end product.
Parents like me! Parents who value the arts but are looking for something that goes beyond the traditional art classes and will challenge our children. Classes that will equip our students to question and explore the notion of creativity and innovation to be better prepared for future career prospects. Classes are offered to middle, high and college level students
